Mayor Brian Smith today issued the following statement on the death of former mayor Clair Robertson:
“Yesterday, I was deeply saddened to learn about the death of Mayor Clair Robertson. On behalf of council and staff, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Mayor Robertson’s family and friends.
“Mayor Robertson’s municipal career started in the mid-1960s when he was elected as a councillor for the Village of Wasaga Beach. Later, in 1970, he became deputy reeve. In 1972, he became reeve, a position he held until 1974, when the Town of Wasaga Beach incorporated and he became the first mayor, a role he held until leaving public office in 1978.
“Mayor Robertson was a key player in securing provincial funding for the creation of a water and sewer system that allowed our town to grow. He also helped secure provincial funding to acquire new equipment for the fledgling town. As well, during his time as mayor, in 1976, the town opened the Schoonertown Bridge, a much-needed piece of transportation infrastructure.
“As an elementary school student at Oxbow Park School, I have a vivid memory of Mayor Robertson and other members of council visiting with us shortly after the town was established in 1974. That day Mayor Robertson handed out town crests to students and I have kept mine all these years. I keep it in my desk drawer as a memento of that special day and my beloved hometown.
“As the first mayor of the Town of Wasaga Beach, Mayor Robertson holds a very special place in the history of our community. His commitment to our town, at such an integral period, helped set us on a successful path – one that we continue to benefit from today.
“In memory of Mayor Robertson, all town flags have been lowered and starting Friday a book of condolences will be available in the lobby at town hall, 30 Lewis St.
“Again, my condolences to Mayor Robertson’s loved ones. He was a true community leader and will be greatly missed.”
