Important Update: Transition to the 2024 Ontario Building Code
The 2024 Building Code will come into effect on January 1, 2025, with a three-month grace period until March 31, 2025 for certain designs already in progress.

April 1, 2025

Please note all building permit submissions must include a completed and signed Building Permit Application Form and Schedule 1 Designer Form, or Commitment to General Review, in addition to all other required materials.
For construction that includes a New Single Family Dwelling, Addition, Detached Garage, Detached Accessory Dwelling and an Inground Pool, a Road Occupation Permit is required. The Road Occupation permit can be uploaded through the portal under "other" with your building permit application.

Residential Building Permits
Under the Ontario Building Code Act (BCA), a building permit is required for the construction or installation of a new structure, or for the construction of an addition or alteration of any structure which results in a building area of over 10m2 (108sqft). Note that the BCA provides that storage sheds under 15m2 (161sqft) do not require a building permit provided they are:
- Detached
- No more than one story in height
- Not connected to plumbing, and
- Used for storage purposes only (no human habitation)
